FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why bother?
Invasive vines shorten the life of trees. The vines compete for the same light and nutrients. In addition, vines add weight to the tree, causing broken and damaged limbs and trunks. The removal of a dead tree can be quite costly and time consuming, especially when you’re dealing with a very large one.
Can’t I just plant a new tree in place of the old one?
That’s an option but of course, trees take many years to grow and provide shade. Plus, newly-planted trees do not sequester carbon at the same rate as older ones.
How long does it take for the upper vines to die?
The weather helps with the die-back factor. The hotter the weather the quicker you will notice brown foliage on the upper tree, where the vines are dying.
Can vine removal be a DIY project?
Yes, especially for the smallest of vines. The bigger the vine, the larger the tools, time, and skill required. Removal of very large vines requires a chainsaw and a great deal of experience!
Can I pull the vine off?
You can pull off tiny vines but should not remove the big ones. Larger vines need time to release their hold on the tree. If the vine is removed too soon, the tree could actually suffer more damage. Remember, the goal here is to be a tree saver!
How long does it take the tree to recover after vine removal?
How much does it cost?
